Tortuguero
Matilda: “Are you asking me things that have most stayed with me? Then it is the trip to Tortuguero with the sea turtles. ”
Tortuguero is also known as Tortuguero National Park and is one of the most popular parks in Costa Rica. The park is located in the province of Limón on the Atlantic coast, about 80 kilometers from the Caribbean city of Limon. The park has an area of 77,032 hectares, of which 52,000 hectares is located in the ocean.
The plants and trees in Tortuguero
Due to sedimentation, the coastal area of Tortuguero mainly consists of sandbanks. The lowlands of the Natural Park are exposed to flooding, caused by heavy rainfall during the rainy season.. The floods have created lakes, grassy marshes and swamps with forests, which really give the park a tropical appearance. There are also about 400 tree species and 2000 plant species in the park, so you will not be bored in this unique environment.
The largest and oldest trees in the park are the almond trees, which can hardly be affected by insects and other animals, due to their strong bark, and are therefore still completely intact. A flower that is common in the park is the orchid. Due to the high humidity, the flower can bloom well in the nature park, which means that the park is full of this beautiful type of flower.
The animals in Tortuguero
Tortuguero offers protection to sea turtles, who come to lay their eggs on the shores of Tortuguero from July to October. Furthermore, there are also black river turtles, waterbirds and caimans that are seen in the so-called Amazon of Costa Rica. If you visit the park at the right time, you can come into contact with the turtles that visit the park to lay their eggs. Of course you should not disturb the animals, while laying their eggs, but you can see the animals from a distance.
