Arenal is the name of the most famous volcano in Costa Rica. The volcano’s spanish name is Volcán Arenal In the past it was even possible to see the red-hot lava flows light up at night, but now there is no more lava in the volcano. Nowadays ,ost people who visit the volcano because of the beautiful nature that surrounds the perfect cone shaped volcano.
Volcán Arenal then and now
Until late 2010, the Arenal volcano was a mainly tourist attraction because of the nighttime appearance of the volcano: If you looked at this special natural phenomenon at night, you saw red strings of glowing hot lava creeping down from a great distance. Even if you watched this from a great distance, the lava flows looked fascinating and at the same time terrifying.
At the moment, no more lava comes out of the volcano, but the volcano is not yet asleep. If you are near the volcano, you can still see clouds rising from the old crater.
The nature around Volcán Arenal
Most people now go to Volcán Arenal because of the nature that surrounds the volcano and the different activities to do. You can hike on ancient volcanic streams to really get in touch with the devastating power the volcano once had. You can also spot animals like coatis in their natural habitat. Would you rather have an utterly relaxing activity near the volcano? Then you can also choose to go to the luxurious thermal baths near Volcán Arenal. The hot water of these baths is warmed by the volcano itself, and slowly flows down through several baths. The higher you sit, the hotter the water. Everyone has its own favorite temperature to relax in.
